Civil liberties, Political Process, and Boxed Lunches

This article covers a lot of topics from ecology, to civil liberties, to political process, to security for the 2010 Olympics. It’s posted here mostly because of the civil liberties issues, which are a critically important point that I don’t believe has had enough play in the media during recent coverage. I’m not a big believer that people should have to present identification and state the nature of their business to visit a friend who happens to live near the interchange site, let alone a local resident having to do so for the privilege of entering the street they live on, both of which happened during the recent police action.

The massive police presence that turned Langford’s Savory Road area into a scene akin to a G7 summit for several days last week has now given way to an unsightly clearcut. But resentment lingers among residents about the treatment they received at the hands of RCMP tasked with providing security for logging crews at the site of the proposed Spencer Road highway interchange. Langford Council Meeting Cancelled… but why?

Langford has cancelled their regularly-scheduled council meeting tonight.  Council meetings are normally the first and third Monday night of every month, with the occasional special meeting (such as the unadvertised Dec. 27, 2007 special meeting which has been described as everything from “a normal work day”, to “undemocratic”, to a “public relations disaster” depending on who you ask).

 The reasons behind tonight’s meeting being cancelled, and what might have been on the agenda, are a mystery at this point. Read the rest of this entry »
