Wear Green on the 17th at Langford Council

Posted by Steven Hurdle on March 15, 2008

The agenda for the upcoming council meeting at Langford City Hall is out, and we now know that they intend to press forward with their plans to pass a bylaw to authorise the borrowing of $25 million dollars without public approval after all, despite media reports to the contrary.  They have indicated they will only initially borrow $9.7 million, but we have nothing other than their promise to ensure that they don’t borrow more.  Everything else about the plan remains the same, including rebating the developers at the same time as they charge them which raises questions about whether the developers will really end up paying much at all (see this article for more information on that).  There are still hoops to jump through whatever happens at this meeting, but we will be there to show our disagreement and to offer our opinions as members of this community.

I recommend anyone who disagrees with Langford Council’s plans wear green in protest.  Wearing green represents:

- green for the money they intend to borrow without our consent;

- green for the ’grass’roots democracy we practice (such as with the petition) to show them a better way;

- and heck, it’s St. Patrick’s Day, so that’s another good reason to wear green.

I understand that there will be protesters on the civil disobedience side wearing black, but those of us who prefer political action instead can wear green so that there’s no confusion about what our goals and methods are.

A Langford woman says the municipality is using its sign bylaw in an attempt to muzzle her opposition to the $32-million interchange being built near Spencer Road and the Trans-Canada Highway.

But Langford bylaw enforcement says the issue is not one of censorship, but litter.
