Inter-municipal hypocrisy

Recently, it came out in the media that our mayor had bristled upon discovering that three City of Victoria councillors had questioned Langford’s proposal to borrow millions of dollars without asking the voters of Langford for permission. The Victoria councillors felt it was setting a precedent that they should investigate because it could someday affect the people they were elected to represent, but Stew Young’s terse response was for them to mind their own business. This is a frequent refrain from the powers-that-be in our community, telling anyone who lives beyond our borders to butt out of our business. It’s not a good way to foster inter-municipal co-operation, and may go a long way to explaining why Colwood councillors rejected amalgamation overtures, citing a lack of a groundswell of public support for it. If you keep telling the neighbours to butt out of your business, it’s awfully hard to later welcome them into the family.

Given Stew Young’s propensity for telling everyone who lives outside Langford’s borders that their opinions on our affairs are irrelevent, you can imagine my surprise watching CHEK News the other day and hearing his comments on Methosin. Read the rest of this entry »
