Is there something very important Langford Council has forgotten?
A resident advertising her Langford information website with signs on her own property is threatened with $100 fines by a bylaw officer while business, real estate and garage sale signs in violation of the same bylaw go uncharged (CTV News, Mar. 14, 2008).
Long-serving councillor and deputy Mayor Denise Blackwell felt free to give “the finger” on camera to audience members at a City of Langford public council meeting on Feb. 18, 2008 (Times Colonist, March, 15). Mayor Stew Young reportedly said her actions were understandable, and that he would have done the same.
The RCMP tactical SWAT Team was called by the City of Langford Feb. 13th to remove 6 peaceful protesters, without any prior attempts at negotiations, costing the Langford taxpayers an estimated $100,000, and days of locked-down streets and paths where local Langford residents and any visitors had to produce I.D. and explain to RCMP and bylaw officers why they were entering or leaving their own neighbourhoods (Monday Magazine, Feb. 20, 2008). Langford Council remains unresponsive to a petition that garnered over 2,250 signatures in 30 days from Langford residents calling for a public referendum about how to fund the Spencer Rd. Interchange except for Langford Councillor Denise Blackwell’s comment that, “the signatures on the petition don’t mean the signatories actually understand the nature of the loan agreement,” (Feb. 13, 2008 Monday Magazine).
