CHEK News report on canvassing

Posted by Steven Hurdle on April 9, 2008

This news report, now available online, followed petition canvassers as they sought signatures against the City of Langford borrowing up to $25 million without first seeking public approval. It was originally done in mid-January, but is now available online for the first time and is still worth a viewing as it gives a sense of community reaction to the petition.

It’s still $25 million, despite promises to the contrary

Posted by Steven Hurdle on April 9, 2008

Two weeks ago, when questioned by resident Kristina Vanlierop about why Council was passing a bylaw to authorise borrowing up to $25 million when they only intended to borrow $9.75 million, Stew Young indicated that Council was going to pass a bylaw later that meeting with the authorisation amount reduced to $9.75 million.

This didn’t happen, the bylaw was adopted with the $25 million figure still in place. Interestingly, when the bylaw resurfaced for this past Monday’s council meeting, then was just as quickly removed from the agenda, the $25 million figure was still the one used in the document before its removal.

We’re left wondering what the heck is going on, on that score. But one fact remains. A promise was made by Stew Young, with members of the public and media present, and that promise does not appear to have been kept.
