Food Security presentation on June 9th

Food security is becoming a more front-of-mind issue for people these days, even making the national news on occasion now which would have been nearly unimaginable not long ago.

In a nutshell, food security is about increasing local food production to ensure, as the world’s population grows, as demand for food grows with it, and as increasing fuel costs make imported food more expensive, that local producers are producing enough food for our needs. As recently as the 1950s, 85% of the food Vancouver Island residents ate was grown on the Island; now that figure is below 10%, which is an astonishing shift. It’s not hard to see the evidence of the shift however, the majority of produce in most local grocery stores is “Product of California”.

There are a lot of food security issues to discuss, including recently proposed removals from Langford’s portion of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), so I would recommend attending this presentation on the 9th. Here are the details below.
