Welcome T-C readers

Posted by Steven Hurdle on October 1, 2008

Welcome Times Colonist readers visiting Inside Langford for the first time, after reading about it in today’s T-C article on the recent blast in Langford. Inside Langford originally broke the story a few hours after the blast itself (the advantages of the internet versus paper) and included a first-hand account. That was followed up with an article with some additional details, including another first hand account from someone who happened to be looking in the right direction when the blast occurred. A few days later pictures of the blast site were posted, and even some speculation on the probable size of the blast.

One detail not mentioned in most of the media coverage of this is the fact that the blast occurred at 5:10 PM, several hours later in the day than local residents were promised blasting would occur on Fridays (originally scheduled to end at noon, then later extended to 2PM). We were also originally promised that blasting would cease by the end of September, and they seem to be nowhere close to finished.

Inside Langford’s role is to be a news source for our community, and we strive to be as impartial as possible in reporting. When posting news, authors are expected to relegate opinions to the comments section after the article, so that their comments become just one of many from Inside Langford readers. Inside Langford will continue to follow this story, and other news specific to our community.

Speculation on strength of the recent blast

Posted by Steven Hurdle on October 1, 2008

This first-hand account is from someone who professes to be associated with the blasting industry who has attempted to calculate the strength of the recent Savory Road blast (I prefer to refer to it by the residents that if affected rather than the mega-project it is for), pictures of which are here. I’m not a blasting professional and not able to verify the person’s calculations, but I list it here for people’s interest and for peer review (if we have any readers who have knowledge on the topic).

“I received Steve Hurdle’s “Langford News Update” this morning and read about an account of the blast which I also felt.

The size of the blast was the eqivalant of a 20 ton blast.
