There’s a lot of talk about using the web for renewing our democracy, but most of that seems to end up about endorsing or otherwise supporting candidates. None of that talk seems to be addressing one of the most fundamental challenges of democracy in the 21st century, that of declining voter turnout.
In the interests of addressing this, I’ve created a Facebook group entitled “Langford, get out to vote November 15th!”. I expect a lot of the people who take the time to visit a news blog like Inside Langford are likely to vote anyway, but that’s not the only reason why you’d join: you’d join so you could invite your friends, family, and anyone else you know to join you there. The Facebook group can then be used as a tool to remind people the election is coming. For now it can be used as a tool to educate people that there’s a municipal electioon coming, and as we get closer to the vote it can shift gears into reminding people that the election is coming. The Facebook Group will be able to send out a reminder a few days before the election of the coming vote, and then again on election day, to help people remember to actually get out and do it.
