At last night’s federal all-candidate’s debate for our riding (Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca), on the topic of sewage all four candidates on the stage weighed in. In speaking order:
-
- Liberal Keith Martin opposed sewage treatment at all, arguing that it would do more harm than good to the environment and that several experts agreed with this
- NDP candidate Jennifer Burgis argued against spending $1.2 billion on the current plan proposed for the Capital Regional District (CRD), but argued in favour of some (unspecified) alternative to it
- Conservative Troy Desouza was for sewage treatment, but suggested that he should be elected so that he could fight for federal money to fund the programme
- Green Party candidate Brian Gordon argued that we should not treat sewage as waste, and instead look at it as a potential resource, noting that many towns in Europe use their sewage systems to generate heat, power, and other resources
