Here’s a story from the Times Colonist, Despite critics, community marches to its own drummer by Bill Cleverley. The article is about Langford, it touches on the municipal election, Mayor Stew Young, Steven Hurdle and the direction Langford is going in and who will be leading it there.

I just came back from Goldstream Avenue down near Tower Fencing/Concrete and Little Elf Garden Nursery, and I couldn’t believe what I saw. I actually did a double-take. They both have signs up for the Langford Team (and for Hinton)! Both of them! Since when do these guys agree on anything?! Tower and Little Elf have fought like cats and dogs for years and years, I have read about their dispute in the Gazette and they were really upset at each other at a council meeting earlier this year. I can’t believe they’re on the same side on the election!

The issue of Tower Fence and Little Elf displaying election signs for the Langford Team and Ryan Hinton has now taken an unfortunate turn. Both businesses still support Langford Team and Hinton, but Little Elf received a threat last night.

C-FAX has reported on this story:

LANGFORD BUSINESS OWNER UPSET BY ELECTION THREATS – C-FAX

    Nov 13, 2008

JUST TWO DAYS BEFORE THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION, A LANGFORD BUSINESS OWNER CLAIMS SHE HAS BEEN THREATENED FOR SUPPORTING A GROUP OF CANDIDATES.

LYNN HEDSTROM HAS OWNED THE LITTLE ELF GARDEN CENTRE GOLDSTREAM FOR ABOUT 30 YEARS AND LAST NIGHT GOT A CALL, THREATENING HER BUSINESS.

HEDSTROM SAYS THE CALL LIKELY CAME AS A RESULT OF SIGNS ON HER PROPERTY SUPPORTING THE ‘LANGFORD TEAM’. “THIS PARTICULAR PHONE CALL WAS TO SAY THAT THEY COULDN’T BELIEVE THAT I HAD TURNED AGAINST THE CITY OF LANGFORD, THE COUNCIL, AFTER ALL THE CITY HAS DONE FOR ME AND THAT THE BUILDERS OF THE DISTRICT WOULD NOT BE SHOPPING AGAIN, EVER, AT MY GARDEN CENTRE.”

HEDSTROM SAYS SHE IS UPSET BY THE THREAT AND SAYS SHE IS ABLE TO SUPPORT AND VOTE FOR WHOMEVER SHE WANTS.

HEDSTROM SAYS SHE DOESN’T KNOW WHERE THE CALL CAME FROM–THE CALLER DIDN’T LEAVE HIS NAME.

That is just so unbelievable. Little Elf has been a destination of choice for our family and helped our school with the student garden – a very good neighbour in Langford for many years. The owners have a right to vote as they wish and to publicly support particular candidates as they see fit, just as we all do. I really hope whoever called has the grace to feel ashamed of their actions and to re-examine their rationale for this behaviour.
