Abrasive campaign marks Langford election battle – Friday TC

Posted by Cheryl McLachlan on November 14, 2008

The Times Colonist story highlights:

The caller accused Hedstrom of stabbing council in the back after it took her side in an ongoing dispute with the Tower Fence cement plant. Council is taking the plant to court after receiving repeated noise and dust complaints by Hedstrom and others. “Anyways, just to let you know that the builders I know will not be buying their landscaping products from you any more,” the caller says.

The call followed a press release in which Hedstrom and her longtime foe, Dennis Madsen, president of the cement plant, jointly endorsed the Langford Team. The two claim the council challengers found more common ground between the opposing sides than council ever did.

“This is a democracy we live in,” said Hedstrom, who said she didn’t recognize the caller’s voice. “I’m allowed to put whatever I want on the front of my fence and my business supporting whomever I feel like supporting. That’s totally wrong; I should not be threatened that way.”

Young said the call was “unfortunate” but not threatening.

I am appalled by Mayor Young’s comments in yesterdays Times Colonist and this is why we need change in Langford.

Young said the call was “unfortunate” but not threatening.
“I hate to see it,” he said, “but if you’re gonna side with people who want to kill jobs, I can see why people won’t go to their business.”

This type of response is customary of a bully. He says that it’s “unfortunate and he hates to see it” but tries to minimize the tactic by saying, “but if you’re gonna side with people who want to kill jobs, I can see why people won’t go to their business.”

One could argue that these comments are not bullying but if one were to combine all his comments and actions over the past year the finding would be that of a bully.

When will you post the results from Langford election?

Remember everyone, when it comes time again to turn and refresh your garden, support your local small business like Little Elf and Tower Fence. God knows the lure of the big box pricing is strong, but they do not have the customer service and product expertise required to attain a truly satisfying result like these people who have been years in the business.
