The Capital Regional District is putting together a Citizens’ Advisory Panel to guide their regional parks and trails policy. Interested residents of the CRD are encouraged to apply by June 12th of this year, and if selected will help guide the CRD in preparing a strategic plan to “set the future direction for our [regional] parks system”. You can get more information, or get forms to apply for membership, at their website, or by calling 250-478-3344.
The deadline for applying to this panel has been added to the Langford Community Calendar.

The Journal of Commerce is reporting that Bear Mountain is paying Langford $25,000 a year for naming rights to the new stadium in City Centre Park (located in what was previously called Hull’s Field, and was formerly a wetland).
The naming rights being sold to Bear Mountain is interesting in part because it was announced with no warning and little fanfare. There is no word at this time on whether the naming rights were tendered to ensure that our municipality received top dollar, or whether Bear Mountain was the only group given an opportunity to bid.

Former City of Langford Clerk Administrator Rob Buchan, who left Langford’s employ recently, has found a new job: he’s now the new “Land-use Manager” for the City of Campbell River. Buchan worked for our municipality for a dozen years, working his way up the ranks to eventually become Langford’s top bureacrat. The new job is a homecoming of sorts for Mr. Buchan, as he had worked for Campbell River previously in the early ’90s.

At the June 15th Langford Council meeting the annual report will be considered. An ad from the City of Langford in the Goldstream Gazette notes that the public may ask questions or make submissions at the meeting, and the already completed document is available for view at City Hall during office hours (8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Mon-Fri).

The City of Langford is hosting a CEERS (Community Energy and Emissions Reduction Strategy) public workshop Wednesday, May 27th, from 6-9 PM at Langford City Hall (on the third floor). City Hall staff and project members will be seeking public input on the CEERS project which will combine strategies to reduce energy and water use in our community. Because this is a suppertime meeting, food is being provided.

The Parks, Rec, Culture, and Beautification Committee is looking at Danforth Park as a possible dog park, and is discussing the issue today at 5:00. Danforth park is behind Westbrook Centre (aka “Western Foods Mall”).

Tommorrow’s Planning, Zoning, and Affordable Housing committee meeting has only one issue scheduled: 636 Atkins, which has built what appears to be a very large number of accessory buildings. Accessory buildings are sheds, garages, and other non-residential dwellings.
The staff report on the issue indicates there are six accessory buildings on the property, but a letter to the committee from a neighbour insists that there are actually eight, and argues that almost all of them are incomplete Read the rest of this entry »
