Agenda and media notes
Posted by Steven Hurdle on October 16, 2009
The agenda for Monday’s Langford Council meeting has been posted to the Inside Langford Files box (accessible on the left sidebar). As always, if something catches your attention let everyone know with a comment.
Also of interest is an article in today’s Times Colonist (Friday, Oct. 16th) that quotes Langford Mayor Stew Young extensively, and also has snippets from Zoe Blunt of the WTF Langford blog, as well as local developer Frank Bourree.
Finally, there is a supplement coming up in a future issue of the Times Colonist (October 17th is the date the T-C was aiming to publish it, but the final date had not been decided the last I knew) entitled Outlook 2010. It will have content about every area within Greater Victoria, including the Western Communities. The Westshore section will reportedly contain four interviews: one with Mayor Young, one with Zoe Blunt, one with Len Barrie, and one with myself. My interview was done in mid-September.

Lots of factual errors but otherwise pretty well balanced. Congrats to Steven and Zoe for the recognition of their hard work.

I linked to WTF Langford for the first time in recognition of the fact that there’s been some good journalism there recently. When it first started it was an unabashed satirical blog, and while some might argue there’s a place for that it wasn’t a news source at that time. Since then, as the T-C article noted, WTF Langford has broken several stories and taken a more news-oriented focus. In the interests of balance I also linked to the City of Langford site in the article.
Thank you for the kind words Sam. There was one question I was asked by the T-C interviewer that didn’t make it into the final product that I wanted to share with Inside Langford readers. The interviewer asked “How do you feel about being lumped in with the likes of Zoe Blunt?” I responded simply: “I don’t feel lumped in with Zoe Blunt. If the connection is that I’m a passionate defender of what I believe in, and Zoe Blunt is too, then so is Stew Young. All three of us are passionate defenders of what we believe in, each of us simply believes in some different things.”

Interesting that you were asked about Zoe as that was one of my issues with the articles.
The Thursday article on the Mayor made it sound like the community was divided between environmentalists and everyone else. Perhaps I am wrong, but I don’t think that it is the case.
I have always been pro development and pro profit for business. My point has been the lack of consultation with the public, the lack of industry diversification, and the reliance on new development to fund the City coffers. These are entirely different issues.
I have no problem at all with Langford expanding and growing, I just don’t want my kids only having low paying service sector jobs as the only local employment options and runaway municipal tax bills limiting their options at home ownership.
