It’s quiet out there

Posted by Steven Hurdle on May 22, 2010

Agendas from the scheduled committee meetings this week have not appeared on the City of Langford’s website. Monday is a statutory holiday so City Hall will be closed, but meetings that would normally fall on that day (in this case, Parks & Rec and Planning and Zoning) are sometimes rescheduled to Tuesday. That does not appear to have happened this time, nor has an agenda been posted for the Protective Services meeting that would normally fall on the fourth Tuesday. So at this points, it looks like it’s a rare Council and committee meeting-free week at Langford City Hall. The Langford Community Calendar has been updated accordingly.

The month in comments – April 2010, part 2/3

Posted by Steven Hurdle on May 21, 2010

Read part 1 here.

In March there was a mysterious “verbal update” on an agenda, but in April Cheryl McLachlan filled us in on the details. She also filled readers in on the controversial closure of Granderson Road and an unusual request re: Aprell Place in one update comment, and more detail about the Granderson situation in another. Finally, she repoted on the “Application to vary the minimum required lot width, minimum interior side lot line setback, and the minimum front lot line setback to allow a fourteen lot subdivision at 2649 Florence Lake Road”

Jebby continued a discussion from March about parking in Parkdale/Westhills. In response Anonymous quoted Joni Mitchell, zipster noted the change to the area, Anonymous suggested a stop-gap solution, and maverick suggested another.

Jebby started or continued several discussions in early April, including this one where he added his thoughts an observations as both a resident of Langford since he was a boy, plus someone who attended public meetings about Langford’s future in the late ’90s. Randy added that “where I come from council is not afraid of the mayor and not afraid for their jobs if they go against him,” and wondered why it is (as some in the discussion had argued) different in Langford, which drew a disagreeing retort from an anonymous commenter. no longer shocked chimed in with their observations and some history on how the current situation has developed.

Rounding out “part 2″, maverick made an interesting suggestion about Zoe Blunt’s history, which drew a bemused denial from Zoe. The final thought in the discussion came from observer who noted it was an interesting question given suggestion our mayor’s a member of the jet set.

Bear Mountain in bankruptcy: report

Posted by Steven Hurdle on May 19, 2010

An unusual source for breaking news, perhaps, but radio station 100.3 The Q is reporting that the creditors who recently seized control of Bear Mountain have decided to let it proceed to bankruptcy. If anyone can provide an online source, please leave a comment with the link.

The month in comments – April 2010, part 1/3

Posted by Steven Hurdle on May 19, 2010

The month started off with jebby speculating that “the free parking in Langford that Stew brags about won’t last forever”. Jebby also shared his thoughts on the mayor having deep business interests in the municipality he makes density decisions on.

Langford Taxpayer queried what Bylaw 1280 was, and Cheryl McLachlan explained it was about the “Community Energy and Emissions Reduction Strategy”.

Rounding out “part 1″, one of the most interesting, and perhaps unexpected, exchanges of April was when Michael Baxter (who informed other readers that “I live in Langford but I am the City Engineer for Colwood”) offered some clarification on an OpEd about public versus private sewage. The discussion grew from there with author Cheryl McLachlan and others including no longer shocked, frequent commenter Tick Tock, a commenter named Freya, and an Anonymous commenter all contributing to a discussion that Michael Baxter called “a really interesting debate.” And while there’s every chance more comments might come, right now Cheryl McLachlan has the last word.
