City Centre Park Bowling Centre pared back; BM “on the map”

Posted by Steven Hurdle on June 22, 2010

The Goldstream Gazette is reporting that the “Langford bowling centre [has been] pared back to fit budget.”

New estimates of the design apparently concluded it could not be done for the originally anticipated cost. The number of bowling lanes has been scaled back, and a planned restaurant scuttled entirely. The original plan had federal stimulus money being pared with money Langford had collected, and about $4 million more that the City would borrow. The intention was that the operator of the bowling alley and restaurant would pay the loan. Negotiations continue on whether that can now be accomplished on the scaled-back design. The original operator, a Surrey-based company, has also apparently had unrelated financial troubles recently.

Meanwhile, the Times Colonist is reporting that Bear Mountain now officially ‘on the map’.

Earthquake fault lines in Langford

Posted by Steven Hurdle on June 21, 2010

Blog Green Langford has an interesting article on where the fault lines are in Langford. Langford has quite a number of fault lines, meaning we could be the epicentre for an earthquake some day. It’s worth a look for those at all curious about how close their home, work, or school is (one appears to go right underneath Belmont). The number of fault lines in Langford appears to be higher than most, perhaps all, of the rest of Greater Victoria.

Green grad

Posted by Steven Hurdle on June 16, 2010

The City of Langford’s website has photos of Belmont grads planting trees near the stalled Spencer Road Interchange worksite. The event was done partly in response to people driving over the partly constructed interchange and depositing garbage on the North side of the construction site.

UFO sighting over Bear Mountain?

Posted by Steven Hurdle on June 13, 2010

Several paranormal-themed web sites are reporting a UFO sighting over Bear Mountain yesterday.

Date: June. 12, 2010
Time: 12:55 p.m.

Location of Sighting: Bear Mountain in Langford B.C. Canada.
Number of witnesses: 2
Number of Objects: 1
Shape of Objects: Cylindrical.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: I noticed a flying vehicle in the sky after finishing off some work we had to do to the house we’ve been building. It was long smooth and cylindrical (cigar) shaped. Metallic (resembling stainless steel) with no visible markings, windows, doors, wings, or even a means of propulsion. It was completely silent cruising at a consistent direction, altitude and speed.

It seemed to be traveling much faster than any planes I’ve ever seen. I watched it travel from one horizon to the other in a matter of 20 seconds or so. I presume it was not man made. If in fact it is a man made craft then such a vehicle is not public knowledge.

Greater Victoria has had reports of UFOs before, and the most recent a quick web search came up with was August 2008 in Oak Bay.

Six storey, 157 unit assisted living apartment with church on Jenkins

Posted by Steven Hurdle on June 11, 2010

The City of Langford’s Planning, Zoning, and Affordable Housing committee’s agenda is now online for their next meeting. Please note this appears to have been rescheduled from its normal Monday night to Tuesday, June 15th, 2010 at 7:00 pm. There are two items of note on the agenda:

Application to amend the P1 (Neighbourhood Institutional) zone at 911 Jenkins Avenue to allow for the development of a six storey building that would contain a 157 unit Assisted Living Apartment and a 257m2 (2,766ft2) Church

Application to amend the text of the AG1 (Agriculture 1) Zone in order to permit a 2-lot subdivision at 3420 Luxton Road

Please note, agendas have not been posted for Tuesday’s regularly scheduled Adminstration & Finance Committee meeting and Transportation and Public Works Committee meeting, so they appear to have been canceled.
