Green grad

Posted by Steven Hurdle on June 16, 2010

The City of Langford’s website has photos of Belmont grads planting trees near the stalled Spencer Road Interchange worksite. The event was done partly in response to people driving over the partly constructed interchange and depositing garbage on the North side of the construction site.

While it’s a great idea to plant trees and everything, it’s one of the worst times of the year to plant them. The hot and dry weather is coming and that looks to be an exposed, well drained site. Although the trees selected will be drought tolerant once established, they will need some time to settle in. I just hope that there is a plan to get some water to them for the first summer at the very least. Otherwise they may unfortunately go the way of many of the sadly neglected Veteran’s Memorial Parkway trees. I realize that this was done for graduation but fall or early spring would of been much better.

Hmm I guess Langford has forgotten there were already trees there until they were cut down for an incomplete project. Still it’s really nice to see the students are actually interested in green space. There is hope.
