Annual report to be considered June 21st.

Posted by Steven Hurdle on June 8, 2010

Cheryl McLachlan reported that the annual report would be considered at last night’s Langford Council meeting. However, it was not on the agenda. There is now a note on the City of Langford’s website that the annual report will be considered “Notice of Council Meeting to Consider Annual Report — The 2009 Annual Report will be considered at the Council Meeting on June 21st, 2010″. The annual report itself does not appear to be online, at least not yet. The notice itself indicates that the annual report will be available at City Hall during business hours, but in recent years has also been made available online.

Fires, runs, and other changes of plans

Posted by Steven Hurdle on June 6, 2010

Some Langford residents along the border with Colwood near Goldstream Ave. may have smelled smoke if they got up early this morning. Unfortunately it was a fire at Colwood Plaza near Colwood Corners, and every store south of Fairways (to the right if you’re facing the front of the store) burned to the ground this morning. I was a volunteer today with today’s Historic Half Marathon, which began and ended at Fort Rodd Hill, and we were re-routed by the RCMP from the Galloping Goose to Sooke Road to avoid the smoke. The ultimate winner of the race was the son of Langford Mayor Stew Young. Goldstream Gazette editor Ted Hill was another participant I recognised.

There’s a link up on the City of Langford for a facebook page entitled Team Haiti Children. There is some Langford-related content on the page, which “has been created to help raise money to rebuild an orphanage in Haiti”.

Annual Report is out & extended hours to pay taxes at City Hall

Posted by Cheryl McLachlan on June 3, 2010

I stopped by City Hall and there are some notices posted on the board:

The 1st notice says the Annual Report is available to view at City Hall 8:30am-4:30pm M-F. It will be considered at this next Monday, June 7th, Council Meeting, and states the public may make submissions or ask questions.

Another notice posted at City Hall says the City of Langford Finance Dept. has extended hours June 1 to July 2, 8:30am-6pm so home owners can come in and claim their Home Owner’s Grant and pay their property taxes. Here is a link to the City of Langford Homepage with the notice that has been put on the City of Langford website. However please note, this announcement has the extended hours ending June 30th.

Roundabout tips and tricks

Posted by Steven Hurdle on June 3, 2010

Yesterday was roundabout landscaping. Today is Roundabouts and Traffic Circles: Why they are used and how to deal with them.

Inside Langford has heard several complaints about the new roundabout (and about the lack of familiarity with them of Canadian drivers). Perhaps City Hall has been hearing them too as they’ve produced this document on how to navigate one (and why you might want to).

Roundabout Landscaping blog

Posted by Steven Hurdle on June 2, 2010

A simple blog on Goldstream Roundabout Landscaping is being maintained on the City of Langford website. The most recent update was about 2.5 weeks ago. The page suggests people keep coming back for more updates, so there should be more content to come.

The installation of palm trees was a surprise addition (it was not a feature that was immediately apparent to me when the original design as presented in council chambers). For those who were confused when ilovepalmtrees commented “Maybe we should form an organization to replace our lawns with AstroTurf,” the city is using astroturf for a boulevard near the new roundabout.

Stew Young’s Blog, part 3

Two new posts recently on our mayor’s blog:

New Sportsplex Will Benefit a Growing Community
The new sportsplex is part of our plan to provide our residents with more recreational activities. It will address the need for more ice time for minor hockey, and fill a void in the region for bowling enthusiasts. It will also create more local jobs, and boost Langford’s efforts to become a tourism and recreation destination.

New Sports Field Is A Hit
The new sports field at City Centre Park is important because it provides another venue for kids at all levels to play a number of sports, including football, soccer and rugby. We need to add venues that promote healthy living for our youth as the community continues to grow, and this new field addresses that need in first class fashion.
