Calendar

The Inside Langford Community Calendar is meant to be an interactive calendar that invites people to add events, important details, and provide updates (such as for cancellations, reschedulings, etc.) for events. Simply add a comment below the calendar listings to contribute. In addition to local Langford events, West Shore, Greater Victoria or CRD events for the whole region are also welcome. Events of a purely commercial nature may not be approved, but posts about garage sales, car washes, and other small-scale community events or fundraisers are encouraged. Events that do not take place in Langford but are focused around a Langford resident (such as a Langford artist’s show) are also encouraged.

  1. A new Langford website, Green Langford, has lots of useful information about everything to do with agriculture and food production in Langford, including Langford Council’s proposed Agricultural Strategy. Visit the website at:

Green Langford – A vision for Langford: Agriculture, Food Security and Eco-Tourism

    http://greenlangford.ca/

  2. The Inside Langford Community Calendar always welcomes the addition of other community events – just post them as a comment and they will be seen on the homepage by everyone and the event will be added to the calendar listing. An event can be big, like the Luxton Fair, or a local art show, or something smaller, like a neighbour block party or your own garage sale. Any special events happening for your children’s Little League team – recruiting new members or a fund raising drive?

  3. It Is the PMD Community Recycling Depot hosted by Belmont Bulldog Greens this Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, 9AM-12PM at Belmont School parking lot – under the covered area. Ring in the New Year by bringing in all the plastic wrap, plastic packaging, and styrofoam you collected over the holiday season to be recycled.

  4. Visit the exclusive West Shore home of Kelly’s Cookies while you discover the other amazing GO LOCAL delights available in the new WestShore Chamber of Commerce community hub at The HIVE.

    The Hive
    - open Thursdays – Sundays 12pm to 5pm
    2830 Aldwynd Road (beside/behind Veteran’s Memorial Park)
    - in downtown Langford
    250.478.1130
    http://www.thehivewest.ca

  5. New every Sunday: Sunday Westshore Indoor/Outdoor Flea Market, 10AM – 3PM @ Goldstream Lodge #161, 679 Goldstream Ave. (Admission $1.00, free admission children & 2-3PM) For more info. and to register, call Bridgette 250 4780-7971

  6. Btw folks – if you want the *Committee* schedule of meetings, go under the small ‘City Hall’ tab at the top right, click it, then on the new list on the left sidebar scroll down to ‘Agendas & Minutes,’ under that pick the 1st entry ‘Council Meetings’ – at the very bottom of that page is the proposed Committee Schedules. Do not try the tabs with the individual committees, those do not include the proposed committee meeting times.

Suggestion: at a minimum rename ‘Council Meetings’ to ‘Council & Committee Meeting Schedules’ or better yet have the ‘Council & Committee Schedules’ as its own tab under City Hall. It is way too many clicks to view the basic info. on when public meetings of Council and its committees are scheduled to be held.

  7. Sorry you missed the depot Mike, PMD is running all their depots in Greater Victoria one week early just this month since Christmas Eve is on a Saturday they usually hold depots. You can always check the Community Calendar here on Inside Langford for the Belmont Depot date, since as a regular depot volunteer I like to promote the depot and I will usually know of any scheduling changes. There are other depots next Sat. Dec. 17th around Greater Victoria if you can not wait until Belmont’s next depot on the reg. 2nd Sat. Jan. 14, 2012 from 9am-12pm. You can check out PMD’s website for the other depot locations and dates, rates and any new items they are accepting for recycling: http://www.pacificmobiledepots.com/Mobile-Depot-Info-Rates.html

  8. I have been adding events to the April Inside Langford Calendar, please check it out. Are there other events we are missing? Either post them in a comment or email me @ cherylmclachlan@shaw.ca.

FOREST and CRD RESOURCE LAND ISSUES

7PM, TUES 1 May, Edward Milne Community School in Sooke

7pm, THURS 3 May, Ambrosia Events Centre, 638 Fisgard St

OUR FORESTS — VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Last year, opposition by thousands motivated CRD to refuse residential developments along the Juan de Fuca Trail as inconsistent with our regional vision. The Regional Growth Strategy is now being revised. SO now is the time for residents to come together and create a positive vision for the forest resource lands which occupy two thirds of CRD land area (on Vancouver Island), and to identify next steps.
Hear what the panelists and other residents think. Share your knowledge and suggestions for the future of these lands.
Program includes: short film by Maeva Gauthier
Panelists for Sooke: Rosie Betsworth, president of Port Renfrew Chamber of Commerce and a leader on ecotourism issues; Bill Bourgeois, founder of the Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities Initiative; and Vicky Husband, Order of Canada-decorated environmental advocate.
Panelists for Victoria: David Anderson, former federal Minister of the Environment, Ken Wu, advocate for protection of old-growth forests, and Ben Parfitt, resource economist with Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
Sponsored by the Jordan River Steering Group

This Tesla Roadster and its driver Kent Rathwell recently made a history-making trek from Saskatoon to the Vancouver International Auto Show. You can meet them both this Tuesday afternoon in Colwood.
Tesla Roadster and Full Size VTrux
4X4 Electric Pick-up Slated to “Juice Up” at bakery’s EV charging station

David Grove is hoping his parking lot at Metchosin and Lagoon Roads in Colwood will be chock a block with electric vehicles of all kinds tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday, May 8) starting at 4:00 p.m., when one of the world’s most exciting electric vehicles will make a very special appearance at the Royal Bay Bakery (3337 Metchosin Road).

“I’m inviting everyone I can think of to come and see the Tesla and learn more about electric vehicles, including the VTRUX, a full size 4X4 pick-up truck. People often say they are interested in electric, but because of their work or recreational needs, require a pick-up. This is a real opportunity for them to do some tire-kicking close to home,” said Grove. Both vehicles are making a special appearance at the Royal Bay Bakery after hearing how David and his team have embraced solar power and are now offering EV charging at their Colwood location.

Everyone’s invited to come and meet Kent Rathwell of Sun Country Highway and his Tesla Roadster, both hot off their recent history-making trek from Saskatoon to the Vancouver International Auto Show.

David Grove and partner Gwen Snyder are clearly converts to electric vehicle driving having purchased a Nissan Leaf earlier this year, and according to an ecstatic Grove, “We’d love to show Kent a warm Vancouver Island welcome, so I’m hoping that everyone who’s already driving electric will try to stop by, too!”

If you’re interested in knowing more about electric vehicles or are already driving an electric car, truck, scooter, electric-assist bicycle come join in the fun at the Royal Bay Bakery, Tuesday, May 8 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. For more information, call David at 250.478.3717.
